Self Sabotage: Six Tips for How to Stop It

We’ve all been there: you finally decide to wake up at 6:30am for that morning yoga session, but then you "accidentally" stay up until 1am mindlessly scrolling through Instagram and in the morning you're too exhausted to get up. Or maybe you have a project you’re really excited about, but you find yourself deep-cleaning the baseboards or reorganizing your kitchen junk drawer instead of just sitting down to start working on it.

If you’ve ever thought “why am I like this?” take a breath. You aren't broken. In fact, self-sabotage is a standard response to personal growth, even when it feels like you’re just tripping over your own feet and getting in your own way.

The Science Behind Why We Do It

Believe it or not, self-sabotage isn't about being lazy. It’s a misguided survival mechanism. Our brains are hardwired to prioritize what is familiar over what is new.

When you approach a big goal or a major life change, your amygdala— that's the part of the brain that handles fear — sees that change as a threat. To keep you "safe" in your current routine, it triggers behaviors like procrastination and/or perfectionism. It’s essentially your brain saying, "Wait! This is different! Let’s go back to what we know," even if you've already actively decided to move on to something new.

The good news? Once you recognize that self-sabotage is just a protective reflex, you can start to rewire those patterns. Here are six ways to stop getting in your own way:

1. Identify Your "Sabotage Style"

Self-sabotage tends to disguise itself as something boring and helpful rather than a major crisis. It looks like procrastination, where you delay starting just so you have a convenient "I ran out of time" excuse to fall back on. Or it’s perfectionism, where you obsess over minor details to avoid the discomfort of actually being finished. When you call out the specific behavior, you stop letting it run on autopilot in the background.

2. Help Your "Future Self"

In my recent post about beating the Sunday Scaries, I talked about doing the hard tasks early to save your future self the stress. The same applies here. When you’re tempted to skip a workout or blow your budget, ask yourself: Will the 'me' who wakes up tomorrow be grateful for this, or will she have to deal with the fallout?

3. Shrink the Task

We often sabotage because the finish line looks too far away. If launching an entire new project feels paralyzing, instead start by just writing three easy to-do's on a napkin. By breaking your goals into tiny, almost laughable chunks, you bypass the brain's alarm system that is causing you to self sabotage. It’s hard for your brain to feel threatened by a five-minute task.

4. Choose "Good Enough" Over "Perfect"

If you're a perfectionist, you might sabotage by never even getting started on your ideas because they aren't completely thought through. But the reality is that done is better than perfect. A messy first draft is infinitely more useful than a brilliant idea that stays in your head froever. Give yourself permission to do a "B-minus" job just to get the momentum going.

5. Watch Your "Internal Thermostat"

We all have a certain level of success or happiness we feel comfortable with. When things start going too well, we sometimes sabotage to bring ourselves back down to a level of stress that feels normal. When you feel that urge to pick a fight or quit while you're ahead, pause and remind yourself that you are allowed to handle things going right, too.

Your brain would rather have a familiar mess than an unfamiliar miracle. Don’t let your craving for comfort kill your capacity for growth.

6. Use Journaling to Find the Root

If you’re stuck in a loop, grab a notebook. Ask yourself: What am I actually afraid will happen if I succeed?

Sometimes the fear of the extra responsibility or the attention that comes with winning is scarier than the fear of failing. If you need a place to start, our Personal Evolution Workbook has specific prompts for digging into these mental blocks.

Self-sabotage is usually just a sign that you’re moving toward something bigger in life. Instead of getting frustrated, try to meet yourself with a little bit of curiosity, and take things slow.

You have the plan and the tools to change the narrative. Now, let’s clear the path and get to work! ☀️
